Lately I have been thinking about giving space a sense of resistance through the medium of painting. To give a sense of resistance is to hold back the acceleration of things, to slow them down. Airplanes and Shinkansen bullet trains have sharp designs with no unnecessary protrusions because, in order to accelerate, they need to reduce resistance from the air. Fast forms, and slow forms. With a curve, a minimal form appears from a single line; with straight lines, a minimal form appears from three. By arranging such forms thinly, so that they do not mix, in a matter-of-fact way, I work while wondering whether a form of painting might emerge that is slow and resistant, not for the painting, but for the space.
