Born 2000, Kyoto

Until now, borrowing the forms of walls plastered with graffiti stickers and of signage (electronic message boards), I have tried to express the anxieties and hopes, impossible to put into words, of conceptual contemporary people.
“Conceptual contemporary people” is a vague phrase, and it is hard to pin down specifically which birth years it refers to. But coming back to basics, painting is also one form of self-expression within art, so I think the key may be “people born around 2000,” myself included. My main motif, signage, takes its cue from the high-rises and neon districts that multiplied rapidly with redevelopment in the Heisei era, and from pop culture. The works borrow the inorganically arrayed dots of signage, and the unpredictability of never knowing what words will scroll by next, to express an unknown future and the anxiety of not being able to see what lies ahead.
I want to make paintings that vividly unleash the Heisei streets, lights, and culture I have seen with my own eyes, paintings in which, in the end, everyone together can finish battered and bruised all over (and, in a sense, make it into the future).
