Works of different materials, colors, forms and viewpoints gather in a single space, and in the “between” new relationships and sensations arise.
Each expression crosses the others and opens out toward landscapes not yet seen.
A five-artist exhibition by MEDEL GALLERY SHU × GALLERY ISHIKAWA.
Sunlight pours down through the leaves, dripping water gives rise to streams, and the wind strikes the mountains, swirls, and dances up into the sky.
Trees reach toward the heavens and put down roots in the earth; connected with all manner of living things, they endure the seasons and fulfill their lives.
The balance that arises there is, I feel, nothing less than a miracle.
I surrender body and mind to the images I receive from nature, layering them one upon another on the canvas. As I paint, moving back and forth between the conscious and the unconscious, between chance and intention, the presence of animals at some point rises up from within the abstract forms. I call them “Disappeared Animals.”
For me, painting is not a means of depicting nature. It is a place for encountering once again what cannot be seen, what has been lost, and the presence that undeniably exists there. In that moment, painting becomes a gate connecting the human world with the world of the wild.
Born and raised in Tokyo's shitamachi, the city's old downtown. Moved to Berlin, Germany, in 2015 to pursue a path in music. The following year, 2016, moved to Northern California in the United States and lived in the mountains for the first time, for about six months. That winter, met a wolf that lived with a friend; the experience of living alongside it for about two months led to the beginning of abstract painting. Continued making work after returning to Tokyo, and named the series that emerged from a search for connection with nature “Disappeared Animals (消えた動物たち).” In 2024, moved to Niseko, Hokkaido, to work while immersed more deeply in nature. Now continues to make work on the themes of the cycles of nature, the balance of life, and the connection between the human world and the wild.

Kenta Kuwana
Using my own hands and my own feet, I bring unknown experiences back home. It is something I have done all along, unchanged since childhood. An experience brought home as my own changes my awareness tomorrow; what I have come to know becomes personal. To stand on my own feet, and to feel 100% that I am here, in this place. I make work so as not to lose that self.
About This Body of Work
I project images onto the night sky. Just as scattered stars are connected to form a single shape, I reconnect anew the eras and places contained within each object, and even the roles it has been given. Sometimes those joints come from Greek mythology; at other times they are associations drawn from insects I have collected. The things at hand become connected all the way to the night sky, beyond reach. Just as a constellation gives stars a new relationship to one another, the objects are linked one by one, creating images that had never come into view before.

Mio Nakahara
Born 1986, Fukuoka
Taking fruit and plants as my main motifs, I paint life and death and the cycle of time.
In the form of a life that quietly takes on color and eventually decays, I sense a beauty and an awe like a microcosm of human life. Following the traces of memory and record inscribed there, and passing them through inner landscapes that seem to drift between dream and reality, I attempt to make visible the mysterious allure that life holds.
The presentation in this exhibition is titled “記憶の静物.”
Born 1986, Fukuoka. Graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, Faculty of Fine Arts, Kyushu Sangyo University, in 2010, and completed graduate studies at the university's Graduate School of Arts in 2012.
Member of the 独立美術協会 and the Japan Artists Association; part-time lecturer at Kyushu Sangyo University.
