Passage of Silence: Where Painting Meets Bronze

Shigeo Izumi×Asami Kato

Set apart from the clamor of everyday life, the space becomes a passage where past and present, fiction and reality quietly intersect.

Painter Shigeo Izumi layers oil paint again and again, as if drawing in fragments of memory. Capturing the instant of tension when the picture plane grows taut, his paintings lead the viewer to a tranquil world somewhere far away, yet surely known.
Sculptor Asami Kato, meanwhile, seals the streets and ruins of Italy, inscribed with the long flow of history, in the eternal material of bronze. No human figures appear, but in the warp of cobblestones and brick walls the breath of those who once lived there and the sediment of time are unmistakably alive.

Two artists, each layering their own material, spin a story of “silence.” The deep matière held within a two-dimensional canvas, and the bronze landscapes rising in three-dimensional space: standing at their intersection, we begin a journey beautiful and solemn, beyond time and space.

A two-person exhibition organized by gallery UG.

In the midst of working, there comes a moment when the picture grows taut.
At that moment the space within the painting closes, color and line are held within,
and I hesitate to paint any further.
In truth, such moments rarely come,
but I keep painting in search of that tension.
1990 Graduated from Musashino Art University; Award of Excellence for graduation work.

Born 1952, Saitama

Traces of ancient Rome remain throughout Europe. I have expressed, in sculptural form, landscapes spun from those strata of history.
The sea of Venice, the rocky peaks of the Dolomites— in the lands built by people who once fled the demise of the empire, the breath of that age still dwells.
No human figures appear in my work. Within the townscapes, among the cobblestones, canals, and windowsills, please imagine the people who live there, and their breath.
Sculptor. Currently based in Italy.
After graduating from the Department of Sculpture at Nagoya University of Arts, moved to Italy and studied under Emilio Greco in the sculpture department of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. After graduating from the academy in 1980, served as a professor at Nagoya University of Arts from 1997 to 1999.
Continues to make work on the townscapes and landscapes of Rome, Venice, Sicily, the Dolomites, and elsewhere.
