About the work
Shigeo Izumi draws on memory to depict the quiet presence of Western buildings, landscapes, and living creatures, in oil paintings built up from many layers of paint into a heavy, richly textured matière, and in watercolors marked by delicate, pale colors and sharp lines.

Shigeo Izumi
In the midst of working, there comes a moment when the picture grows taut. At that moment the space within the painting closes, color and line are held within, and I hesitate to paint any further. In truth, such moments rarely come, but I keep painting in search of that tension.
