This work is based on a scene I saw on my way back from Mt. Awagatake, which stands on the border between Kamo and Sanjo in Niigata. Against an overcast sky, the line of mountains looked so matte and flat that they seemed almost fake. I was struck by the contrast between the depthless mountains, the straight paths running between rice fields, the square buildings lined up in the distance, and the organically swaying plants. I depict the mountain as a symbol of the longing I feel, having grown up in a city of constant change, for a landscape that never changes.
Sampled from the 1995 TV anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, Episode 1, “Angel Attack.”
