About the work
I can’t eat foods in unnaturally bright colors, but this painting is based on a memory from childhood: seeing ants swarming over some Popping Shower that had fallen in front of a Baskin-Robbins, and finding it fascinating. Watching ants eat anything edible without a second thought, whether insect carcasses, artificially colored human-made foods, or mysterious objects of unknown origin, struck me as a very honest and neutral attitude. Power lines are a motif I return to as a symbol of the landscape I grew up with, having been born and raised in the city, and the silhouette of a lone house is another I keep painting, as a longed-for scene I could never find there. The subtitle text was sampled from the 1987 film Doraemon: Nobita and the Knights on Dinosaurs.
